Will my fat turn into muscle when I start working out?

April 13th, 2009 | by fat |
La Songeur™ asked:

I’m overweight now and I would like to start getting into better shape. If I do a lot of strength training, will the fat on my arms, for example, turn into muscle so then my arms stay the same size and I’m doomed to have big arms forever?! Or will the fat go away completely and then muscle will start to form?

Thanks for any help!

Burning fat and building muscle tone are two different things. Fat does not turn into muscle. If you want toned, lean arms I would recommend doing your exercises with low weight and a high number of repetitions.

Your muscles will get bigger. You need to do more cardio-vascular exercises as well to lose weight through exercise. Also look at your diet.

No, fat does not turn into muscle. You can increase muscle bulk with weight training or other forms of resistance exercise.

Fat is stored food/calories/fuel. It gets used up when you eat less than you need to power daily activities. The two processes are separate, but can happen at the same time if you’re sensible about your diet and don’t try to starve yourself.

The best exercises for weight loss purposes are the old aerobic standbys, running, cycling and swimming, because they burn a lot of calories.

So the standard advice to eat a little less of a balanced diet, and exercise more is really the best. To meet YOUR goals, some running, some lifting, and eat right.

No you will burn your fat, build the muscle and you will eventually get smaller. BUT you have to be careful of what you eat so you can lose that fat. I worked out like a mad lady, and didn’t diet, so I built loads of muscle and the fat stayed ON TOP of the muscle. I was that way, very strong but also large for a couple of years before I started doing cardio and watching what I put in my mouth. The fat eventually went away and under it was a nice lean and toned body. But to avoid having to work twice as long, make sure you eat clean healthy food that will help you to lose fat while gaining muscle.

BUT also don’t watch the scale too closely during the time you are gaining muscle and losing fat, it may discourage you because muscle is heavier. So measure yourself (arms, hips, calves, thighs, chest, stomach) when you start, Keep a list, write it down, and keep measuring often, this is the best way to see the fat come off as the scale may not always tell you the truth.

I lost 49 inches from head to toe. I am a fitness instructor now and try to spread it around :) Loving changing peoples lives.

Fat doesn’t turn into muscle. but don’t be alarmed! strength along with cardio will help burn fat and REPLACE it with muscle. The skin on your arms will shrink depending on how much your skin streached . In order to keep the fat off however good eating habits along with strength training and cardio will do wonders.

ok. u cant change fat into muscle. u can lose fat and replace it with muscle. to do this, u hav 2 work out for 30 min or more and 3-5 times a week. u hav 2 work out at least 30 min, because ur body burns sugar then fat and it takes about 20-30 min 2 burn fat.
    I hope this helped.
