Will eating more fat but the same amount of calories make you gain weight?

August 22nd, 2010 | by fat |
Chris P asked:

I know eating less calories than your burn will make you lose weight, but what if you eat more fat than usual, but the same amount of calories, will that make me gain more weight and get fatter?

(And I mean saturated fat, not too much though)

Thanks!

Gram per gram fat contains more calories. One gram of fat is 9 calories, where are one gram of protein or carbohydrate contains 3. If you eat more fat grams but consume no more calories then it will not make a difference to your weight. Its the over all amount of calories consumes which lead to weight gain or weight loss.

Calories are measured by putting food in a device called a bomb calorimeter and burning them. Despite the wide spread acceptance of calorie counting, it is certainly questionable that food is burned off in the body in the exact correlation to the bomb calorimeter. You may find this hard to believe, but I lost more weight on a medium-fat diet than a low-fat diet. I then researched the subject. Apparently, the mitochondria in your cells needs fat to burn off calories. People can lose weight on a low-fat diet, but their metabolism will slow down significantly. Protein and fat are good for weight loss. Carbohydrates are the enemy. If you replace carboydrates with fat, then you will burn calories faster. By the way, the Atkins Diet supports what I am saying.
